Miglena Rogan brings 14 years of strategic experience in medical stop loss and group benefits to her new role. Most recently, she led the Stop Loss Collaborative at Willis Towers Watson in St. Louis, where she also served as a director in their Health & Benefits division. She previously held senior actuarial roles at Ascension Health and Towers Watson in St. Louis.

Rogan is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, a member of the American Academy of Actuaries, and a Chartered Enterprise Risk Analyst. She earned bachelor’s degrees in mathematics and in business administration with a concentration in finance from Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri.

What do you like most about working for Symetra?
Since I first joined Symetra, I have been impressed by the collaboration and the teamwork that I see all across the organization. There is a sense of shared goals and a common purpose that brings everyone together.

What's been the biggest change in the industry you've seen in your career?
In my opinion, the biggest change in the industry was the enactment of the Affordable Care Act in 2010. Among other things, the ACA removed the annual and lifetime limits on coverage by employer-sponsored plans, causing a huge demand for reliable, financially strong and fair-priced medical stop loss coverage. The removal of annual and lifetime maximums, coupled with the increased prevalence in self-funded plans, has resulted in the stop loss industry more than doubling in size in recent years.

What's the most important quality in an insurer?
I believe the most important quality in an insurer is transparency. In the ever-evolving insurance industry, with fast-changing regulations and development of more sophisticated products, every customer deserves to have full clarity of the value of the product(s) they are buying and understand how they, their loved ones or their employees are protected. I am inspired to work for an employer that has transparency as one of its three guiding principles.

What’s the most important thing you've learned in your career?
I’ve learned not to take anything for granted and look for opportunities to learn and grow in any situation.
