California Employee, Applicant and Contractor Privacy Notice
FOR CALIFORNIA RESIDENTS
This California Privacy Notice (“Notice at Collection”) serves to inform Symetra Life Insurance Company and its affiliates’ (collectively, “Symetra”, “we” or “our”) former, current, and prospective employees, job applicants, independent contractors, agents, brokers, financial professionals and temporary and other workers (collectively, “consumers”, “you” or “your”) about our collection and processing of your personal information and your rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act, as amended (“CCPA”).
This Notice at Collection provides additional information required by the CCPA to California residents regarding our collection, use, and disclosure of your personal information.
If you are not a former, current, or prospective Symetra employee, job applicant, independent contractor, agent, broker, financial professional, temporary or other worker who is a California resident, see the California Notice at Collection.
Personal Information We Collect
We may collect the following categories of personal information from or about you. Some personal information may overlap in other categories.

Retention of Personal Information We Collect
We retain the personal information described in this notice as required by applicable legal, regulatory, operational, and fiscal requirements (collectively, “Retention Requirements”) in accordance with our records management policy. The retention periods applicable to such personal information and sensitive personal information are based on our Retention Requirements and may vary depending on the category of information and respective need or purpose for its retention.
Sources of Personal Information We Collect
We may collect the categories of personal information described above from the following sources:
- Information you provide. We collect personal information directly from you, your application, identification documents or other forms completed during our relationship with you or indirectly through interactions with our technologies and our websites.
- Recruitment agencies.
- Agents, brokers and financial professionals.
- Third parties authorized by you. We may receive information from other third parties that you authorize to provide us with information, such as consumer reporting agencies, medical professionals, financial professionals, and your current and prior employers.
- Our service providers. We may receive information about you from our service providers that process personal information on our behalf, including through the use of machine learning technologies.
- Government and regulatory agencies.
- Publicly available databases and media.
- Other third parties authorized by you.
Purposes of Collection of Personal Information
We may collect the above-described categories of personal information for one or more of the following business or commercial purposes:
- To provide you with the information, products, or services you request from us.
- To meet our obligations and enforce our rights arising under our agreement[s] with you.
- To communicate with you, such as when you purchase a product or service, or contact us with a request or inquiry.
- To operate, manage, and maintain our everyday business operations, such as making insurance decisions, administering our employee benefits and payroll, accounting, auditing, marketing, advertising, and maintaining records.
- To test, research, analyze, develop, and improve our products and services, including the use of machine learning and other artificial intelligence systems.
- To conduct internal investigations.
- For securing and protecting our systems, such as device authentication by facial recognition and voiceprint, protecting against malicious or fraudulent activity, detecting security incidents, or assisting in debugging or repairing errors that impact our sites, mobile applications, or services.
- For evaluation of suitability for job positions, employment, ergonomic assessments and evaluations, and vendor management-related purposes.
- To appoint or onboard agents, brokers, financial professionals, and their delegates.
- To contact employees regarding job roles and duties by voice or text message.
- For technical assessments such as evaluating employee’s home Internet connectivity to troubleshoot IT issues and determine compliance with company IT standards.
- To respond to and meet legal and regulatory obligations in legal proceedings and government investigations, and as otherwise required by applicable law, court order, or government regulations.
- To protect our legal interests and to help ensure the safety of others.
- As otherwise described to you when we collect your personal information or when we provide you with an updated notice.
Disclosure of Personal Information
We may disclose your personal information to one or more of the following categories of third parties:
- Third parties to which you authorize us to disclose your personal information. We may disclose personal information to third parties that you have authorized us to disclose personal information to.
- Distribution parties. We may disclose personal information to the independent insurance professionals who sell and service our products.
- Service providers and contractors. We may disclose personal information to service providers and contractors that perform services on our behalf.
- Affiliates. We may disclose personal information to companies that are part of Symetra’s affiliated group of companies.
- Governmental entities and third parties in connection with legal matters. We may disclose personal information to governmental entities, such as regulatory agencies, law enforcement, and judicial authorities, as well as other third parties.
