How would you describe your job to someone who has no idea what you do?
I work in the New Business department, which handles all the applications that clients/agents submit when they want to purchase deferred annuity products from Symetra. I review the applications and any additional documents to ensure all state rules and regulations are followed.
How did you get into your line of work?
I was originally brought on through a temp agency, but I have always been interested in working for a bigger corporation. My previous skills meshed well with the New Business department, and aside from being in a different department for two years, I've been here most of my Symetra career.
What skills do you use most in your job?
Attention to detail and leading by example.
How does your job help Symetra's customers, your coworkers or the company?
I am dedicated to getting my work done quickly and accurately so a client's paperwork can be processed and funds can be applied (or a transfer request can be sent out to the other carrier) in a timely manner. This ensures that the client's contract is mailed out without delay.

What do Symetra's Core Values mean to you? How do you apply them to your daily work?
Our values are the main reason I'm sticking around. I live by them on a daily basis. I keep the positivity in mind and it drives me to be successful.
What advice would you give to someone starting out in your field?
Be a strong student of the business, listen to and learn from those around you, focus and stay dedicated. Voice your opinion and don't be afraid to step out of the box and see the bigger picture of your job description. You'll find you are being noted and rewarded for things you may not even see yourself accomplishing.
What would people find most surprising about your job or Symetra?
Yearly bonuses! A lot of companies out there don't give bonuses to their employees, so that's always a happy "gift" at the beginning of each year. And the opportunity to be promoted and grow within the company is a big plus. To be encouraged by your very own manager is something worth shouting about.
How do you enjoy your time away from work?
I have six chickens, two dogs (a Great Dane and a boxer/mastiff) and a chameleon, so playing with them keeps my afternoons busy. When I want to get away, I enjoy going to the movies, the gym, camping, boating, betting on the horses at Emerald Downs, walking the dogs and taking road trips to visit my family in Montana.
