Michael Fry is executive vice president of the Benefits division for Symetra Financial Corporation’s insurance subsidiaries. He has profit-and-loss responsibility for the company’s stop loss, Select Benefits, and group life, disability and absence management businesses, including strategy development, product management, sales, underwriting, service and operations.

Fry joined Symetra in 2002 as vice president of the Benefits division, helping to establish Symetra as a leader in the stop loss insurance market as well as expanding the division’s other varied benefits solutions. Before joining Symetra, he was a senior vice president and chief operating officer of Lincoln Re Risk Management Services and previously held various management positions within Lincoln Re. Fry’s professional experience also includes banking and public accounting.

Fry graduated from Indiana University with a bachelor’s degree in accounting, and is a member of the Self-Insurance Institute of America.

The enactment of the Affordable Care Act in 2010 under the Obama administration.

Acting with integrity and keeping the promises made to policyholders.

Who inspires you?
My 87-year-old mother, who approaches each day with a positive attitude and gratitude for the blessings in her life.

What’s the most important thing you've learned in your career?
Treat people the way you want to be treated. The rewards are immeasurable.

What does “eliminate the noise” mean to the Benefits Division?
In the Benefits division, we strive to provide clear and thoughtful solutions to our policyholders and our producer partners who represent them. Our goal is to ensure our policyholders know exactly what they have purchased from Symetra, resulting in peace of mind that there will be no surprises at claim time. Our policyholders have a lot to worry about, but working with Symetra should not be one of them.
