Our employees are engaged and strongly committed to giving back to our communities. We empower them to be generous with both their time and resources to foster inclusive, healthy places in which to live and work.
Employee volunteering
Summer of Service
In 2021, we expanded our former Symetra Week of Service into an entire Summer of Service and reintroduced in-person volunteer projects following 2020’s COVID-imposed hiatus. The expanded timeframe, along with both virtual and in-person volunteer opportunities, offered employees greater flexibility. Our team stepped up to contribute 370 volunteer hours, bringing the total number of hours logged for this annual campaign to 19,170 since 2009.
BOLD Program (Board Orientation Leadership Development)
Launched in 2021, our new BOLD (Board Orientation Leadership Development) program provides nonprofit leadership training for employees and matches them to nonprofit boards that align with their talents and interests. So far, we have added seven new board members to local organizations.
Empowers Community Award
Our Empowers Community Award is given each year to the employee who best represents Symetra’s spirit of service, volunteering and leadership in their local community. Winners receive a cash award and a $1,000 donation to their nonprofit of choice.

Holiday giving
Though we were not able to hold our annual office-based Adopt-a-Family fundraising and holiday gift activities due to COVID, employees still gave generously in support of communities and organizations that needed help more than ever as a result of the pandemic. Using Symetra’s Matching Gift program, they pledged more than $154,000 during the 2021 holiday giving campaign.
I CARE
Our employee giving campaign helps employees identify and support the organizations that mean most to them—with a company match for all donations. Since 2014, employees have donated over $5,700,000, including the company match. In 2021, employees supported over 1,000 organizations with financial donations.
