A message from President & CEO Margaret Meister

With the March 2022 launch of Symetra Social Impact, our first corporate social responsibility (CSR) program, we took an important step toward realizing our Symetra Empowers vision “to create a world where more people have access to financial freedom” and living up to our aspiration to be the country’s most inclusive insurance company.

"Most inclusive" is a bold ambition that we're working to achieve across our entire business. It shapes how we build and distribute our products, how we meet people where they are, how we support our employees, how we show up in our communities, and how we fulfill our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). These actions send an important signal to both our current customers and the new customer segments we want to reach about how Symetra’s brand values align with their values.

Symetra Social Impact aims to align meaningful transformation across three priority areas—social commitments, sustainability and governance—through eight initial goals that are aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Our initiatives underscore Symetra’s commitment to advancing positive social change, supporting a healthier environment, and making a better world for the communities we serve through a robust CSR program that authentically reflects who we are as an ethical company, an engaged corporate citizen and an inclusive brand.

In 2022, we made some good progress on our goals, including dedicating funds to offset our carbon emissions, launching Missions, our sustainability platform for employees, and establishing our partnership with Morgan State University for our scholarship program. Sumitomo Life, our parent company, is also committed to their role as a corporate citizen with a long-standing corporate citizenship program. Our joint commitment to giving back is one of the key common traits that continues to make our partnership so successful.

Ultimately, fulfilling our promise to be here for our customers now and in the future is our purpose and the reason we come to work every day. Serving our customers, supporting our employees, and innovating for the future are critically important to Symetra’s long-term success. Equally vital, we believe, is our work to support and give back to our communities. With Symetra Social Impact, we aim to be clear, intentional and transparent about our efforts.

Our social goals

Our social goals align with our commitment to show up for our communities, lift up our employees and stand up for DEI.

People matter

Scholarship

We’re partnering with historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) to support students obtaining a post-secondary degree. By 2025, we’ll provide multiyear, wraparound support for 25 scholars from HBCU partner institution Morgan State University to fund tuition and barrier reduction.

Employee engagement

Our employees are strongly committed to giving back to their communities and building a better world, and we're creating more opportunities for them to do that. Our goal is to increase their engagement from the 2019 annual participation average of 50% to 65% by 2025 via sustainability programming, volunteerism and giving.

Financial literacy

We believe financial literacy is essential to creating long-term, generational financial health and security. We’re creating a Community Financial Literacy program that will launch in 2025 as part of our commitment to help empower underserved populations.

Supplier guidelines

We believe that the supplies and services we purchase should reflect our commitment to environmental responsibility and supplier diversity. We’re establishing guidelines for our suppliers, and we'll begin implementing them by 2023.

National environmental partnership

We’ve partnered with the National Park Trust and have committed $150K by 2025 to fund access and education programming for underserved youth.

Employee sustainability program

In 2022, we launched an engagement platform alongside our current volunteer and giving programs that connects employees to our overall sustainability work and gives them opportunities to engage personally on environmental and sustainability efforts.
