Symetra LINK® Fixed Indexed Annuity - Series 1
LINK is not your average fixed indexed annuity. LINK’s indexed account is based on the volatility (risk) control index, which removes the need for an interest rate cap.
More growth potential
Like other FIA’s, LINK credits interest based on the positive performance of an index. However, LINK uses a lower volatility index than many other FIAs.
Lower volatility—or risk control—indexes typically have more stable performance than pure equity indexes, with less upside in favorable markets and less downside in poorly performing markets. This lower volatility helps LINK owners by eliminating the need for an interest rate cap, which allows more growth potential than many other FIAs in the right market conditions. However, LINK is subject to a margin, which is subtracted from the performance of the index to determine the interest we will credit at the end of the interest term.
The tradeoffs are:
- You will not know the amount of interest you have earned (if any) until the end of the indexed interest term --- which is five years.
- The possibility that you could earn less than you would have earned in a fixed deferred annuity or fixed indexed annuity with a cap.
No downside market risk
Regardless of market performance, you will never receive less than the return of your purchase payment, less prior withdrawals and charges, if held to the end of the surrender charge period.
If your contract is held until the end of the surrender charge period, you won't pay taxes on interest until the money is paid to you.
Your purchase payment will be refunded if the contract is cancelled within 30 days1 of contract receipt.
Multiple ways to access your money
You have three options for accessing your money during the surrender charge period:
- Free annual withdrawals of up to 10% of the contract value.
- Nursing home and hospitalization waiver.2
- Annuitization anytime after the first 12 months of the contract.

Symetra LINK® Fixed Indexed Annuity—Series 1 has an indexed account and a fixed account at the end of the indexed interest term. Interest credited for the indexed account is affected by the value of an outside index. Values based on the performance of an index are not guaranteed. The contract does not directly participate in any outside investment.
If the contract is being funded with multiple purchase payments, e.g. 1035 exchanges, funds will be held and the contract will not be issued until all purchase payments have been received. Interest is not credited between the dates the purchase payments are received and the date the contract is issued.
An index does not include the payment or reinvestment of dividends in the calculation of its performance.
It is not possible to invest in an index.
If the index is discontinued or if the calculation of the index is changed substantially, Symetra reserves the right to substitute a comparable index.

Withdrawals may be subject to federal income taxes, and a 10% IRS early withdrawal tax penalty may also apply for amounts taken prior to age 59½. Consult your attorney or tax advisor for more information.
A Market Value Adjustment feature (MVA) is a positive or negative adjustment that may apply when all or a portion of the contract value is withdrawn. An MVA will apply to a withdrawal of more than 10% of the contract value in a contract year during the surrender charge period. It may also apply upon death or annuitization, but only if it results in a cash surrender value higher than the contract value that would otherwise be paid. A negative MVA can never cause cash surrender value to be less than the guaranteed minimum value. After the surrender charge period, no MVA applies.
The fixed account interest rate will never be less than the fixed account guaranteed minimum interest rate. After the guaranteed interest rate period, the interest rate can be reset at the end of each fixed interest term, but will never be lower than the guaranteed minimum interest Rate (GMIR) stated in the contract.
A margin is subtracted from the index growth at the end of the 5-year interest term. The margin will be determined at issue and will appear on the contract data page. The subtraction of the margin will never result in interest credited below the floor. See current LINK rate sheet for any applicable margin rate.
Tax-qualified accounts such as IRAs, 401(k)s, etc., are tax-deferred regardless of whether or not they are funded with an annuity. If you are considering funding a tax-qualified retirement plan or account with an annuity, you should know that an annuity does not provide any additional tax-deferred treatment of earnings beyond the tax-qualified plan or program itself. However, annuities do provide other features and benefits, such as death benefits and annuity payment options.
The guaranteed minimum value (GMV) is 87.5% of purchase payments accumulated at the nonforfeiture rate, less any prior withdrawal. Prior withdrawals are after the effect of any surrender charge and Market value adjustment (if applicable). Nonforfeiture rate varies by contract issue date and is not redetermined after issue. Current nonforfeiture rate: 1.00%. Rates are subject to change without notice.
