Roger F. Harbin

Chief Operating Officer

Roger Harbin is chief operating officer and executive vice president of Symetra Financial Corp. and its insurance subsidiaries. He is responsible for leading the company’s product line operations. Harbin also serves as the company’s chief risk officer.

In 1977, Harbin joined Symetra Financial in the actuarial department. He subsequently served in a variety of actuarial and management positions.

In 1984, Harbin founded the company’s Structured Settlement department and was named vice president two years later. In 1987, under his leadership, the product line was expanded to include deferred annuities sold to bank customers. In 1992, Harbin was named senior vice president of the annuities division and later promoted to executive vice president and manager of life company operations in 1998. He also chaired the board of trustees of the company's mutual funds operations prior to its sale in late 2004.

Harbin is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and has served on the boards of a number of industry organizations, including the National Structured Settlements Trade Association, the National Organization of Life & Health Insurance Guaranty Associations (NOLHGA), and is currently a member of the boards of state insurance guaranty associations in Washington, Virginia, North Carolina and Montana. During 2001, he served as chairman of the board of NOLHGA.

He is active in community affairs and in 2001 was honored by the Seattle Times for his work on transportation issues in the Puget Sound region. Harbin is on the board of the Chief Seattle Council of Boy Scouts of America and the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce.

Harbin has a master of arts degree from the University of Montana.
