In 2008, the IRS introduced comprehensive 403(b) guidance – a set of regulations that brings 403(b) requirements much closer to those of 401(k) plans. Essentially, there are two key action items for your plan sponsors:
- Maintain a written plan document.
Employers must manage their 403(b) in accordance with a written plan that details plan eligibility, benefits limits, approved vendors and products, and administration.
- Communicate with employees. Employers must now take an active role in communicating with employees at least once a year about plan eligibility and how to make changes to their contributions.
