Name:
Kevin
Position:
Senior Product Manager, Retirement Division
Location:
Bellevue, Wash.
How long have you been with Symetra?
I started in 2006 in the Annuities Actuarial department. After 3 1/2 years there I moved to the product management team in what’s now the Retirement Division.
Why did you choose Symetra?
I chose Symetra because it was growing and receiving good “buzz” in the industry, and it appeared to offer a great deal of career potential. This is true even more so today. My first visit to the Seattle area was the day of my interview—I almost instantly realized it would be a great place to live and work.
What’s your educational and professional background?
I have a bachelor’s degree in actuarial sciences and am a fellow of the Society of Actuaries and a member of the American Academy of Actuaries. I started my career at Allstate Financial near Chicago working a bit in the finance area, but mostly on annuity product development. I worked there for 6 years and then made the big move out West.
I’m probably one of the few actuaries who knew about the profession in high school (my mom's friend was an actuary). When I learned it combined math, statistics and investments, I knew it was a good choice for me.
Can you describe your day-to-day work?
My main focus is working with various areas of the company to develop new products. That means figuring out if it’s something that will sell, that will be approved by various state departments of insurance, that we can administer within our annuity system, and that we’ll be happy with from a pricing and risk management perspective.
What character traits are most important in your job?
Being a good communicator is a big one, especially when you’re working on a complicated product. Being able to explain the detailed aspects of the product, and understand the perspective of those asking questions about the product to help frame an answer, is vital. Also, being creative and innovative is certainly helpful. Having a group of people who can come up with innovative ideas and take them to the market can be a big differentiator.
What motivates you?
Contributing to the development of products that help people save for retirement, or provide guaranteed income for the rest of their lives, is definitely motivating. Seeing my own parents in their early retirement years is a good reminder of the value of what we do at Symetra.
What's your favorite thing about working for Symetra?
I'm excited to work for a company that's in a great position for growth. I think we've got fantastic potential, and I'm excited to be able to play a part in making Symetra an even stronger company in the years to come.
