How long have you been with Symetra?
I started as the company receptionist in October 2010.
 
What’s your educational and professional background?
I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in interior design with a minor in business from Washington State University. Later, I earned an Associate of Arts degree in library science and information technology from Lake Washington Technical College. I love research and wanted to develop my technical skills.

Before joining Symetra, I was with JPC Architects, who designed our beautiful reception area and other common areas in the building. During my career, I have worked as an office manager, administrative assistant, receptionist, researcher and executive recruiter.
 
Can you describe your day-to-day work?
My day involves greeting and helping Symetra customers, employees, messengers and interviewees. I answer the corporate phone line and forward calls to the appropriate destinations. The receptionist role falls under Corporate Security, which adds additional responsibilities that most receptionists don't have. I issue, track and provide badges with the appropriate access for both Symetra employees and vendors. When issuing badges for the first time, I take pictures, print new badges and assign access. I process paperwork for contractors, vendors or temps to record their status. Other responsibilities include distributing the parking vouchers, submitting work orders for parking activation and deactivation, and providing guests with wireless access.
 
What character trait is most important in your job?
Attention to detail is extremely important, along with the ability to switch gears quickly. The desk can get very busy. If an emergency arises, it's vital to keep a clear head and provide as much information as possible to help the internal Security/Emergency Response Team and any outside emergency responders. Above all, it’s crucial to understand that some of the responsibilities in this position affect people's safety and the protection of company information.
 
How do you feel you contribute to the company's success?
I may be the first face-to-face contact an employee, vendor or visitor has with Symetra. The receptionist must be professional, courteous and helpful. I strive to meet each person's needs as quickly and efficiently as possible so they can move forward with their responsibilities.

What’s your favorite thing about working for Symetra?
I’m thrilled to be part of an organization with such a bright future. Working at the reception desk is a great place to meet people in the company. I admire the professionalism, hard work and dedication I see from them. And the team I work with is terrific — everyone at Symetra should feel fortunate to have such a committed team responsible for our safety and security.
