Position: Business Systems Specialist Unit Manager
Location: Enfield, Conn.
How long have you been with Symetra?
I joined Symetra in 2012 and spent most of my first year getting our Connecticut office up and running before focusing on refining our new claims software system.
What attracted you to Symetra?
One of the major reasons I chose to work here are the people. I had the opportunity to work with great people from my past who were already at Symetra expanding the Group Life & DI business. I've been part of a "startup" operation twice before and really enjoyed it.
What’s your educational and professional background?
I have a bachelor's degree in communications, with a concentration in radio broadcasting, and worked at radio stations in Keene, N.H., and Springfield, Mass. I spent 14 years in the insurance business before coming to Symetra. I also managed computer systems at a nonprofit organization.
Can you describe your day-to-day work?
If there’s such a thing, a typical day consists of learning the database tables and building reports that will meet the needs of both internal and external customers. I often meet with the software project team — which consists of staff from Bellevue, Chicago, Maine and California. We're working to make our claim system easy to use for our employees, so we can help those in need in a timely and efficient manner and ensure that our financial data is accurate.
What does it take to be successful in your role?
I think that flexibility, adaptability and good communication skills are key to being successful in my role. Processes and systems are always changing. It's all about meeting changing demands and helping improve the lives of our claimants and insureds.
