What’s your educational background?
I have a degree in communications and psychology, which Is especially helpful when it comes to marketing. I've always been interested in people and what motivates them. That translates to marketing pretty well.
Can you describe your day-to-day work?
My job is to provide marketing support to all three of Symetra’s business divisions. That can involve writing, editing, working with designers, or collaborating with Sales or Product clients to create new or updated marketing pieces.
I act as a project manager, too, putting together schedules for marketing projects and ensuring that deadlines are met. When there's a new sales or product initiative, I’m responsible for securing agreement among Sales, Product and Compliance on content. My job is great for someone who doesn't like to do the same thing every day!
What's your biggest challenge?
Because we work with so many different departments — and we're in a regulated industry — we have to make sure what we're saying to distribution partners and consumers is accurate, in compliance with state and federal regulations, and that it fits what our sales teams need to really sell the product. At the same time, it also needs to be good marketing — compelling, to the point and easy to understand.
What does it take to be successful in your role?
You have to be resourceful and be a people person. In my job, sometimes you hit a roadblock when you're up against a deadline — like how do you reconcile what Sales wants and what Compliance says we can say? We have to resolve those issues quickly.
